A Huntington Park movie Palace / Jean Harlow fashion illustration / historic preservation art piece. Part of my series of artworks where the woman wears the architecture like clothing.

I chose Jean Harlow (Harlean Harlow Carpenter) and her Howard Hughes produced film “Hell’s Angels” due to it’s 1930 released date, and her acting debut. 1930 is also the same year as Warner Brothers Huntington Park Theater in Los Angeles opened up to audiences.

Although the Zig-Zag moderne architectural style was still going strong form another 3 years, the fashion started to shift into a more softer streamlined look. Makeup was still it’s transitional phase with traces of 1920s heavy eye shadow. Thin lashes still prevailed however the heavy marcel finger waves were loosening up a bit.

Several architectural elements of the Warner Huntington are integrated into Jean. For instance, her earrings are based on the original box office terrazzo floorin under the marquee lobby entrance.

The theater is located at 6714 Pacific Blvd, Huntington Park, CA 90255. Although it sat empty since 1990 in a neglected state, Blink / Equinox fitness now owns the property and for the most part respectfully kept the interior intact during it’s gym transformation. It was designed by renowned architectural B. Marcus Priteca best known for The Pantages theater in Hollywood.
